Strategy for preparing the first day of IUP Test from Alina Irnadi
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has always been my dream school since I was a kid. For me, not only does it offer the best curriculum in my country, Indonesia, but also, it provides the student with a supportive environment and highly appreciated scholar with a long experience in their field of study that would help me deepen my knowledge and understanding in my chosen area of study. During the second year of high school, I did some research on the ways to get into UGM and I found out that UGM offers an internationally standard program, named IUP. I was so excited to find out about this as I believe that by studying in an international standard program, I will be more prepared to thrive in this globalization era. After I found out about this program, I gathered as much information that I could get. I found out that there are two written subjects that are being tested which are AcEPT (English proficiency test) and GMST (psychological test). I took a private class in IONs and chose to study 2 times a week. I took an intensive lesson for the written test as if I didn't pass the first test, and couldn't pass the second day which is the interview and focus group discussion.
For GMST, there are 3 subjects that are tested, those subjects are verbal, numerical, and figural. Because I am no expert in mathematics, I try really hard to make myself familiar with the materials. I always asked for an extra task during my meetings to sharpen my understanding and mathematical knowledge by exercising by myself at home. I summarize all the materials that are taught in a little book. Mathematics is the only subject that I struggle in. For verbal and figural, they are easier for me to understand the materials better. Nevertheless, I am not a person that is easily satisfied, I continue to deepen my understanding of the materials by studying every night. For AcEPT, I didn't struggle a lot, as the passing grade for my chosen major is the TOEFL score of 550. I have passed the passing grade as I was a student in an international program myself. However, I still took an AcEPT class once a week and took a TOEFL test, and it turns out that the class helps me to reach a TOEFL score of 623. However, focusing on the written test doesn't necessarily mean that I didn't prepare for the second day of the intake. Three months before the intake, I took an intensive interview course once a week with Ms. Anisa. I also always practice my answer in front of a mirror to help with my facial expression, and this method of mine works really well because I've used to practice my interview a lot, I didn't stutter in the actual interview. I always believe when there's a will, there will always be a way. For me, the most important thing is to grow a motivation within yourself, so you can enjoy what you're doing even though it seems hard.
